Rather than create a straightforward port of the original Space Invaders, Atari opted to make a game that is very loosely based on the 1978 coin-op classic. This version is faster and less methodical, and the whirling, twirling, gyrating, mutating (in later levels) aliens are colorful and cute (to the point of silliness).
